Ottawa, Canada, Tuesday, September 1, 2009 – With today’s growing concern for the environment, renewable energy sources are becoming more accepted and in demand. Wind Power, the conversion of wind energy into a practical form of energy using wind turbines, is one of these sources that is contributing to the production worldwide electricity and is growing rapidly. Wind Energy is an appealing alternative power source because it is plentiful, renewable and clean, and does not produce green house emissions.
Terrapoint has collected accurate topographical information including LiDAR data and orthophotography for wind farm projects across North America and recently conducted LiDAR surveys for two wind farm development sites in western Canada. Terrapoint surveyed more than 500 square km and generated topographic information products including classified LiDAR data with vegetation cover, digital elevation models (DEMs) and contour files.
In addition to wind data, accurate topographical information derived from LiDAR data is required for planning, designing and building wind farms. In order to optimize the location of the wind turbines, engineers use LiDAR data to model wind flow, turbine performance, sound levels, etc. LiDAR data is also used for planning the roads and routes that connect the wind farm to the electricity grid and allows engineers to identify and assess any impact to the environment and natural landscape.
