Oregon Department of Transportation uses TITAN® Mobile Scanning Solution

Houston, Texas, Thursday, February 26, 2009 – The TITAN® division of Ambercore - the 4D Company - is pleased to announce that the Oregon Department of Transportation recently completed a successful mobile scanning project on 77 miles of largely urban four-lane highways in west central Oregon.   They used the TITAN® mobile scanning system provided by David Evans and Associates.

The project involved a road side inventory of features to support various safety improvements and pavement projects.  In the past this type of data was hand gathered, which not only exposed the survey crews to traffic dangers, but resulted in a single purpose data collect and solution.

Using the TITAN® system to collect the corridor resulted in an accurate and complete inventory of all the road side features.  This data will fully support current projects, and additionally provides an archive of features for use on future projects.  The overall cost to do the TITAN® inventory was competitive with the traditional hand gathered method, but resulted in a much more useful product and greatly decreased the risk to the field survey crews.

TITAN® is a mobile LiDAR scanning system developed and sold by the TITAN® division of Ambercore.  TITAN® collects a dense and accurate 360 degree data set at highway speeds without interfering with traffic flow.  It also eliminates the need to have surveyors exposed to the risks of traffic because the system is operated totally from within the vehicle.

About the Oregon Department of Transportation
The Oregon Department of Transportation is responsible for all the state owned highways in Oregon.  They have a long history of being an early adopter of appropriate technology which will enable them to manage these highways in a more efficient manner.  ODOT has been a user of static scanning technology and saw mobile scanning as the next logical step with the technology.  ODOT develops programs related to Oregon’s system of highways, roads, and bridges; railways; public transportation services; transportation safety programs; driver and vehicle licensing; and motor carrier regulation. The state of Oregon is ranked 15th largest according to total miles of highway (urban and rural) by the U.S. Department of Transportation 2007 Highway Statistics.
