Ottawa, Canada, Friday, September 25, 2009 – Ambercore’s TITAN Mobile Laser Scanning division was a participant in a National Research Council controlled scientific experiment to measure, understand and model the impact of explosives on pressurized airplanes. The project called Kaboom 2 was conducted in Ottawa. This was the second such exercise and follows Kaboom 1 from two years ago, that assessed how bombs could be smuggled onto airplanes and how this could be prevented. The experiment was observed by over 400 security professionals including police and fire services, as well as anti- terrorism and security people from around the world.
The focus of Kaboom 2 was to understand the dynamics of how an airplane would be impacted by explosives detonating from within the cargo hold. After simulating a high-risk security environment, scientists and aircraft security experts are provided with post-blast data to help them better understand structural failure and how airplanes handle explosions. Ambercore’s TITAN mobile laser scanning system was the key precision measurement system for the experiment. TITAN was used to produce a highly accurate 3D survey of the aircraft prior to the explosion, and then again after the explosion to capture the structural changes to the aircraft hull fuselage and potential debris expelled in the surrounding area. The data from the experiment will be used to develop mitigation measure and improved aircraft design standards to improve passenger safety.
