Terrapoint Systems Operator (Ottawa)

General: Terrapoint Canada has an immediate opening for a System Operator to work in the field. The System Operator is responsible for the collection of airborne data through the operation of Terrapoint’s high and low range LiDAR systems, or other systems as required.

System Operator duties include:

  • Assist the Project Manager to ensure accurate collection of data.
  • Responsible for the full cycle operation of systems in helicopter and/or fixed wing aircraft
  • Accountable for assessing the quality of data while airborne and determining whether or not to continue with the data collection.
  • Supports in evaluating the GPS satellite configurations to determine ideal weather windows.
  • Assists the project operations team in the office through initial processing, data organization and general operation administration.
  • Aids the Project Manager in project set up and attending to equipment maintenance.
  • Attend safety meetings at the start of each project to review general safety and hazard assessments.
  • Coach and mentor new System Operators.

Specific Requirements:

  • An equivalent of a post-secondary two-year technical diploma in Geomatics or GIS surveying and/or a minimum of two year’s GIS survey related field experience. Experience in remote locations is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems.
  • The ability to exercise sound judgement, trouble shoot system deviations, improvise and make sound decisions based on the quality of data and independent of guidance from the Project Manager.
  • Proven ability to multi-task.
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly convey and discuss technical issues with the project team.
  • Comfortable working in a small aircraft for up to six hours per day.
  • Must not exceed the individual weight restrictions as determined by helicopter guidelines.
  • Must have a valid drivers licence, passport and be able to travel internationally.

Working Conditions

  • Extensive field travel averaging 200 days per year with rotations up to 30 days (longer under certain circumstances when agreed upon with manager). During field days, a 24-hour on-call schedule is required.
  • International and domestic travel and long distance driving in various climate conditions.
  • Confined spaces, frequent motion and turbulence in small helicopter and/or fixed wing aircraft for up to six hours per day.
