Road and Rail, Infrastructure

Infrastructure in general is something our society will constantly be developing, improving or enhancing.  Roads and railways are a large part of this evolution as the population increases and new areas are being developed.

Highway corridor surveys are becoming more and more difficult and expensive to acquire because of the need to minimize lane closures, traffic disruptions and safety hazards posed to the surveyors as well as the public. Roadway workers and surveyors are at risk, whether in vehicles or not, when working in the traffic corridor if they can’t move with the flow of traffic. Safety for the travelling public is also a major problem when lanes are closed, or blocked by slow moving vehicles. Working on the edge of the corridor and having to enter and exit traffic flow can also be dangerous to the highway worker as well. Costs for the placement of safety trucks and pylons to protect the survey crew can in some instances be greater than the cost of the survey work itself. To mitigate these issues, a survey data acquisition tool is needed that will collect detailed topographic and infrastructure information without requiring traffic management, lane closures or even a disruption in traffic flow. Similarly, there is a need to survey railways and the surrounding areas. In mounting a TITAN system on a vehicle, the solution delivers a very compelling combination of speed, superior accuracy, lower survey costs, and safety which makes it a clear choice for future corridor surveys.

TITAN® Variants recommended:

TITAN® Classic

TITAN® Classic is designed to provide a fast, accurate, and safe method of surveying transportation corridors.  It has set the standard for mobile scanning, successfully completing more projects than any of its nearest competitors.  The horizontal and vertical accuracy of the TITAN acquired data meets surveying and engineering grade specifications. The system design is flexible to take advantage of continually advancing component technologies as they become available. TITAN Classic has repeatedly completed collection of survey data of transportation corridors in 1% to 10% of the time required by conventional survey methods.  In addition to time and cost savings, TITAN Classic minimizes the safety risk to survey crews.

TITAN® Long Range

TITAN Long Range is designed to provide fast, safe and accurate surveying of surface mines and other challenging situations where a range in excess of 300 meters is necessary to accomplish the project.  The horizontal and vertical accuracy of the acquired data meet the requirements for this type of survey.  The rapid collection provided by this rugged system enables time critical surveys which were impossible in the past using conventional methods.  These surveys are done at the fraction of the cost of traditional surveys and with greatly increased safety to the survey crews.

This variant of the system uses long range lasers on one or both sides.  This enables the system to collect data at ranges in excess of 300 meters depending on the reflectance of the target.  Compelling applications for this version include surface mining, where scans of spoil piles, tailing ponds and mine faces need to be performed rapidly and with low risk to survey crews.  In the past it was not possible to scan mine faces regularly using traditional techniques.  A closely related application is the collection of steep slope areas along highways and rail lines where this type of data is critical to modeling the risk of areas for rock falls, and other similar hazards.

TITAN® Lite

TITAN Lite is an entry level mobile scanning system with all the features of the TITAN Classic.  It uses lower accuracy positioning and scanning components, but still retains TITAN’s rapid acquisition capabilities and world class processing software suite.  Many 3-D projects do not require the accuracy required for highway design and this system meets this need.  TITAN Lite also allows the incorporation of various add-on sensors to the system.

By using a lower cost IMU and scanner, the TITAN technology can be made available to users desiring a slightly lower accuracy but still needing rapid and safe data collection.   There are many applications requiring dense and reasonably accurate data where TITAN Lite will fit the bill.  It also provides an upgrade path to more accurate scanning, as your needs change.

TITAN® Universal

TITAN Universal is the only system of its kind in the world.  It is a combination of a ground mobile LiDAR unit, and an airborne LiDAR unit that share a common IMU, computing system, and software.  This results in a dramatic increase in the utility of the components and a reduction in cost of the overall system as compared to buying two standalone units.  The scanners on both units are optimized to the specific applications of the client.  The shared operating and processing software allow for commonality in acquisition and production processes, thereby optimizing personnel training and deployment.
