Open Pit and Tailings
In the mining and heavy oil industries, it is imperative to have a fast and effective way to collect high resolution survey data of engineering quality for open pit mining and tailings ponds. Ground-based scanning and conventional surveying methods take days or weeks which can interfere with production activities. The safety of personnel who collect the data is often a major issue in areas of surface mining activity where there are large heavy vehicles constantly on the move.
TITAN mobile scanning from a vehicle is far safer than ground-based or conventional surveying methods and takes only a fraction of the time. The speed at which data is collected minimizes delays to the mining schedules and processes. For example, operational mine faces can often be surveyed in the time during shift change, causing zero delays in production. The TITAN solution is ideal for finding differences between two time periods to accurately monitor the changes in the terrain. Data from the TITAN solution dovetails cleanly into existing data workflows to produce deliverables including engineering drawings, as-built, contours and volumes.

TITAN Long Range is designed to provide fast, safe and accurate surveying of surface mines and other challenging situations where a range in excess of 300 meters is necessary to accomplish the project. The horizontal and vertical accuracy of the acquired data meet the requirements for this type of survey. The rapid collection provided by this rugged system enables time critical surveys which were impossible in the past using conventional methods. These surveys are done at the fraction of the cost of traditional surveys and with greatly increased safety to the survey crews.
This variant of the system uses long range lasers on one or both sides. This enables the system to collect data at ranges in excess of 300 meters depending on the reflectance of the target. Compelling applications for this version include surface mining, where scans of spoil piles, tailing ponds and mine faces need to be performed rapidly and with low risk to survey crews. In the past it was not possible to scan mine faces regularly using traditional techniques. A closely related application is the collection of steep slope areas along highways and rail lines where this type of data is critical to modeling the risk of areas for rock falls, and other similar hazards.
TITAN Lite is an entry level mobile scanning system with all the features of the TITAN Classic. It uses lower accuracy positioning and scanning components, but still retains TITAN’s rapid acquisition capabilities and world class processing software suite. Many 3-D projects do not require the accuracy required for highway design and this system meets this need. TITAN Lite also allows the incorporation of various add-on sensors to the system.
By using a lower cost IMU and scanner, the TITAN technology can be made available to users desiring a slightly lower accuracy but still needing rapid and safe data collection. There are many applications requiring dense and reasonably accurate data where TITAN Lite will fit the bill. It also provides an upgrade path to more accurate scanning, as your needs change.
